Pilgrim`s badges

Image
Flying penis
Holland (many similiar were found)
(PBH1) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) Penis was supposed to bring luck in love. Many presentations of penis with different addings were found. This one means "I`m a macho". (you can see atributes like crown, bell and wings.)

Image
Pig playing bagpipes
Utrecht, Amsterdam, Kampen
(PBH2) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) Phrase "LAET KNORREN" (which is mix of flemish and latin) should be translated as "happy pig" or "pig having fun". This badge could have ment a loud drinker, person who wants to have fun, sing and dance.

Image
Our Lady`s shrine
Gdańsk, Amsterdam, Dordrecht
(PBH3) - 4.50euro
(1300-1400)Lady`s pilgrim badge. Strange look of persons was quite common between early badges. It might be even intentional. Probably this pattern is token of remembrance from Aken (Germany)

Image
Cock and hen Holland
(PBH4) - 4.50euro
(1375-1450) Another pattern with sexual meaning.Cock and hen together symbolize fertility and lechery. But cock itself could be a symbol of faith.

Image
Cat and mouse England
(PBH5) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) This badge symbolize fight between good (the cat) and evil (the mouse) in which good wins. Latin phrase "VI SIS MIS" can be translated as "I`ve caught the mouse".

Image

Physician
England, Dordrecht, Remerswaal
(PBH6) - 4.50euro
(1300-1500) This popular pattern is a joke about medieval medicians. Medician, shown as a monkey in monk`s hood is standing on a fish, preparing medicine and pissing into it (maybe it is connected somehow with a fact that pacients health was judged by look of his urine).

Pilgriming vagina Holland (Remerswaal, Rotterdam, Amsterdam (PBH7) - 4.50euro
(1375-1450) Unfortuantelly I couldn`t find the exact meaning for this one. I can only guess. It could be joke about pilgrims or sign that you`re on kind of "sex trip".(vagina holds rosery, pilgrims staff, it has hat ) It`s quite possible that it has something to do with the motive of the end of the world and break of meanings. (vagina, something unholy with pilgrimage to holy places) Popular pattern.

Lion Holland, England, Germany (PBH8) - 4.50euro
(1375-1450) Lions were common on heraldic badges (for example in Holy German Empire) and for city guards. Lion itself symbolise loyality and readiness.

Pelican Holland, Germany, England, France (generally whole Europe) (PBH9) - 4.50euro
(1325-1500) Pelican is fedding its children with it`s own flesh. It`s a symbol of Christ and His mercy. Very popular religious motive.

St.Iosse (Jodocus, Judocus?) Germany, France, Holland (PBH10) - 4.50euro
(1400-1450) Pilgrims badge from St. Josse-sur-Mer. (France) This saint was a patron of all pilgrims (he holds pilgrims staff in one hand and a book (mayby Bible?) and rosary in second, he also has pilgrims bag) This badge is replica of finding from Dordrecht (Holland).

St.Michael Archangel Sluis (PBH11) - 4.50euro
(1350-1400) It could be a pilgrim sign from Mont St.Michel in France (Normandy) but it differes in style from badges from that place. Name Michael ( Mika`el ) in translation from Hebrew means "who but God". These are words of Archangel when he attacked rebellious Lucifer. Michael is angel responsible for special God`s orders. He is a protector of the Church, conqueror of evil powers, he accompanies soul going to the Last Judgement. On badge he is pictured at moment when Gods Hand prevents him from killing defeated evil, symbolized by dragon. This could be symbol of God`s mercy, compassion and grace.

Hunting vagina Westenschouwen, Amsterdam, Niuwlande (Holland) (PBH12) - 4.50euro
(13750-1425) This badge is rather rude. Probably it was made for girls looking for "adventures". (if that is the meaning it would be hidden somewhere and showed only to chosen person) This badge is replica of finding from Westenschouwen (Holland)

Happy devil (Wild man) Ieper (Ypres - Holland), Nieuwlande, Amsterdam (PBH13) - 4.50euro
(1325-1450) Wild man (originally that is the name of this pattern) symbolize great sex power. It can also mean (when carried by a man ) a wild person looking for a lady to civlize him. This pattern is replica of finding from Ieper.

St.George Holland, England, France, Germany (PBH14) - 4.50euro
(1300-1500) St.George is patron of knights and all fighting people. This badge is not a token of remembrance from pilgrimage but rather a talisman supposed to bring luck.

Thomas Becket Rotterdam, `s-Hertogenbosch, Nieuwlande, Veere, Heijst (PBH15) - 4.50euro
(1350-1500) English saint, bishop of Cartenbury. He was murdered by knights of king of England Henry II in 1170. Pilgrim badge from Cartenbury. Very popular badge, many different patterns were found; not olny badges but also ampullas for water. (first ampulla from Cartenbury comes from year 1170!) This pattern is a replica of finding from Rotterdam from years 1350-1400.

Fox and goose (swan?) Amsterdam (PBH16) - 4.50euro
(1350-1400)

Hand with heart pierced with arrow Dordrecht, Sluis (PBH17) - 4.50euro
(1325-1425) Another lover`s badge. Memento for lovers. (canary, goldfinch or maybe pigeon (?) holds phrase "AMOVR" standing on hand, with heart pierced with arrow on it. It probably it ment: "I`m in love". This pattern is replica of finding from Dordrecht.

Crowning of penis `s-Hertogenbosch (PBH18) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) Badge like this colud have been given to a guy going on a pilgrimage (penis is holding walking stick and a bag). It means that a person was promised to have sex when he comes back or that he already had sex with his love before going. (that would explain why it`s being given a crown) It was kind of a funny memento about his love for person.

Penis being grilled by family. Amsterdam (PBH19) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) You can see whole family here. Child is spining a broach, mother is doing something with kettle and father stands and watch. It`s difficult to say, but probably it shows "reverse of powers" in the world. Popular motif at the end of middle ages, when people believed that the end of the world is near. (but it is possible that it have another "rude" meaning).

Knight on horseback Germany, France, Holland (PBH20) - 4.50euro
(1350-1400) One of many patterns of "tournament badges". Badges like this were sold as souvenirs for fans. Often painted in colours of the knight somebody was supporting. St.Sebastian `s-Hertogenbosch, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tolsende, Nieuwlande (PBH29) - 4.50euro

It`s peak of prosperity are 12th and 13th century.

Archer Nieuwlande (Holland), London (PBH32) - 4.50euro
(1375-1425) It`s hard to figure out meaning of this badge. It could have been a reward in archery competition or perhaps it was worn by members of some shooters brotherhood or maybye archers company. It also might have been just a simple picture of favourite sport. This pattern is replica of finding from Nieuwlande.

St.Barbara England (PBH33) - 4.50euro

Number of virgins is effect of mistake when reading the phrase on tomb. It says "XI M V" what means "Eleven Martyr Virgins", because the phrase was damaged "M" had been interpreted as thousand. St.Ursula is patron of young women and good death. This pattern is replica of finding from Gdańsk.
